First I will let you know that I am a Man of color. I won't be using " Ebonics" to express myself. I use the term Man of color because I am black, arab, asian and native american. But to look at me you would identify me as black. First of all I am (statistically anyway)more likely to have a crime committed against me be someone who is black. Most shows on Television are dominated by white people. I would say at least 85% of the faces I see are white. You say you don't have any special groups watching your interest. You do. Its called the U.S. Government. And February the shortest calender month for black history. Come on! I have only seen history for the European point of view all my life. Before you mistake me for a member of the Nation of Islam. Let me set this straight. I have friends all across the racial spectrum black, asian, arab, persian. You name it. Im back, and after further review of all comments made, Attacking someones Gramar and spelling as most of you did, the derogatory names, & the insults that were handed out, leads me to believe that there are more ignorant white people than there are any other race, in terms of this forum. Reason being, The first to insult, put down, and prove superiority, were white. The very route of racism is hate, and ignorance. There is no good form of racism, for those who were blatently justifying stereotypes, and discrimination. Know what I really think should happen? Everything should be equalized.

No racist-based affirmative action. Help repair and equalize all public education. Some people defend affirmative action by saying that in certain regions or areas, school quality is worse and the majority population is black or colored, and they should get a slight boost in college applications because they had adverse learning conditions.

Instead of giving them a boost that only makes racism complacent, why not FIX the system?
Stop bitching about bad schools and how people who go to them are worse off and need to get admitted more than others, FIX THE SCHOOLS. Get new teachers, supplies, whatever.

While we're at it, why not give women equal pay for equal work? Women still don't get as much money as men for the same job, statistically. Why not fix that? No one gives a damn, it seems.

To be sympathetic to any injustice, you should be sympathetic to all conditions of mankind.

If you call me a racist, then you can't belive in affirmative action, and you had better not use racial slurs or want Black History Month.

Guess what, a federal school-taught month for a specific race or culture is RACIST. Instead of not fixing the system of books or government, people are complacent with forming a crutch with black history month.

Guess what, I truly admire and respect Martin Luther King jr. I've read his speeches, I've bought his posters, I've read his writings. I truly admire and respect him as a human being. He wanted the utmost equality for ALL oppressed. I do not think he would condone affirmative action.

i think that in getting so tied up in what you judge to be a black and white issue (in the sense that its one way or the other) you fail to see in the big picture in your efforts to find clarity. the fact is, our culture, american culture, is racist. Black people are viewed as ignorant, uneducated, lazy, untrustworthy, criminal.... And these views are saturated into the media and our everyday lives, not just for white people, but for all americans.

As a white american girl, i know i could grow up and marry the next JFK, or be 'america's sweetheart', but besides those things, be succesful, sweet, smart, loving, funny, a truly 'productive member of society'. These images and others permeate the subconscious of myself, and everyone who will deal with me.

A black american will primarily be portrayed as a drug dealer, whore, single mother, member of a tragically dysfunctional family, angry, confused, ignorant...and these images will do the same thing.

It is not so long ago (1950s or 60s) that that four men here in our city drove around one night looking for a black person to kill and murdered a mother of 3 (i may be getting the exact numbers wrong, off memory) as she was walking home with icecream for her kids. There were confessions from each man, and only one man was put behind bars, and only for 3 years.

We are not so different, and our generations are still very influenced by those before us.

The whole purpose of these "crutches" you talk about (college admissions, black history month, etc) is to heal the wounds, so that the crutches are eventually not needed.

Even if you do not believe the methods to be effective (i think we can all agree on dissapointment over certain programs) do not be so cynical as to dismiss them without taking into proper account their purpose, and why they are needed.

Black crime, statistically, is committed by other blacks. If you look at blacks injured or assaulted, there is a VERY high chance it was caused by another black. Black males are statistically more likely than any other category to cause harm to anyone else.
